Welcome all

Everyone is welcome at SouthPointe Christian Church. Everyone. That means you! Your trans friend? Of course! Your lesbian aunt? Yup! Your straight dad who is just bringing the jokes? Yeah, he’s welcome too! All means all! Come join us, we believe we will be better with you here!

Here’s the nitty gritty on welcoming all: we know plenty of people have been told they’re welcome when they’re not fully welcome. When we say you’re welcome, we mean to the full life and leadership of the church. That’s true for LGBTQIQA+ folx, as well as many other people who have often found themselves without a place to belong. Our denominational shorthand for this is “Open and Affirming,” which you’ll see in a few places.

There are three stories we tell a lot around here because they reflect how we strive to follow Jesus:

  • Jesus calming the storm (Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25)
  • Jesus feeding 5000 people (Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:31-44; Luke 9:12-17; John 6:1-14)
  • The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-29)

If one of those stories resonates strongly with you, there’s a good chance you’ll like it here. Regardless, you are welcome here!

From the Pastor

Hey there!

I’m Abby Conley, the pastor of SouthPointe Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and I’m glad you’re here!

If you’ve found your way to this site, you’re probably wanting to know more about the church and some about me. Here are the churchy sort of things you might want to know: I grew up in the Independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, the conservative cousin of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Because of this background, I can geek out about the Bible in a very different way. Sword drills? Yep! Bible Bowl? My college hosted! No idea what I’m talking about? Totally reasonable! Let’s say it was a different world, but one that gave me a strong foundation for what I do now. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English from Milligan College (now Milligan University) and a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. I was ordained in 2013 and have served Disciples of Christ congregations in Georgia, Missouri, Arizona, and now Nebraska. My spouse and I moved to Lincoln in 2021 when I became the pastor at SPCC.

And here are the things people are usually more interested in:

  • I don’t care about football at all. I grew up in Kentucky, where basketball is the only sport that matters. I don’t follow the games now, but Go Big Blue! And I hope Duke loses!
  • LEGO comes up often around me. Yes, we’ve had two summers of Life Lessons from LEGO sermon series thanks to me! The nerdery extends to board games.
  • Halloween is a BIG DEAL at my house. Full size candy bars. Popcorn. Cotton candy. The whole shebang and then some. And I love a good horror movie as well. I’m not going to turn down a bad horror movie, even.
  • I share my household with my spouse, Matt, and two cats, Melody and River. (Yes, we’re Doctor Who fans. It’s fine if you aren’t.)

I hope to meet you soon. You’re welcome to contact me through the church office if you have other questions about SPCC.

peace—Rev. Abby Conley

SouthPointe Christian Church is a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. This mainline protestant denomination is a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. Read more about the Disciples at disciples.org.

We are an “Open and Affirming” congregation, which means we affirm the image of God in LGBTQIQA+ individuals and welcome them into the full life of the congregation, including leadership. You can read more about LGBTQIQA+ Disciples ministries at http://disciplesallianceq.org/.
